Utrecht University
Coen Rigtering holds a Master degree (cum laude) in Policy, Communication and Organization from the VU University in Amsterdam and a Ph.D. in Corporate Entrepreneurship from the Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.). Currently, he works as an assistant professor at U.S.E specialising in corporate entrepreneurship, organisational theory and entrepreneurship. He has been a guest lecturer at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in 2009 and Stellenbosch University in 2010 and 2012.
His research concentrates on how individuals contribute to innovation, entrepreneurship, and change, with a particular focus on corporate entrepreneurship. He investigates how corporate innovation policies (e.g., rewards, structures, teamwork), practices (e.g., idea competitions, advisory boards), and individual characteristics (e.g., motivation, risk aversion) are related to employee innovation, performance, and knowledge diffusion. He combines insights from (strategic) management with (social) psychology to explain how differences in performance outcomes occur as a result of interactions between individuals operating at different (hierarchical) levels and in different (organizational) contexts.
His work is published in several academic journals such as: Academy of Management Discoveries, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of Business Venturing, and British Journal of Management. . In 2012 he was named the USE Ph.D. student of the year. His primary research interests are in the field of corporate entrepreneurship, intrapreneurship, and strategic management in family businesses.
